Who are Buena Vista Social Club?

Buena Vista Social Club was a group of veteran Cuban musicians who came together in 1996 to record an album in Havana, under the guidance of American guitarist and producer Ry Cooder. The album, titled Buena Vista Social Club after a famous music club in Havana that closed in the 1940s, was a surprise hit, selling over eight million copies worldwide and earning a Grammy Award. The album also sparked a revival of interest in Cuban music and culture, and led to several documentaries, tours, and solo albums by the members of the group.

The group consisted of some of the most talented and experienced musicians in Cuba, many of whom had been retired for many years. Some of the members were:

  • Compay Segundo (1907-2003), a singer and guitarist who invented the armónico, a seven-stringed guitar.

  • Rubén González (1919-2003), a pianist who was known as "the dean of Cuban piano players".

  • Ibrahim Ferrer (1927-2005), a singer who had a distinctive voice and style.

  • Omara Portuondo (born 1930), a singer who was dubbed "the Cuban Edith Piaf".

  • Eliades Ochoa (born 1946), a singer and guitarist who specialized in the guajiro (country) style.

  • Barbarito Torres (born 1956), a laúd (lute) player who was a virtuoso on his instrument.

  • Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal (born 1933), a trumpet player who was a master of the son montuno rhythm.

  • Orlando "Cachaíto" López (1933-2009), a bassist who was considered "the heartbeat of Cuba".

What is son cubano?

Son cubano is a genre of music that originated in Cuba in the late 19th century. It combines elements of Spanish guitar music, African rhythms, and vocal improvisation. Son cubano is considered the foundation of many other popular Latin music styles, such as salsa, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. Some of the instruments used in son cubano are tres (a three-stringed guitar), bongos, maracas, claves (wooden sticks), and trumpet.

Son cubano is characterized by its syncopated and polyrhythmic structure, its call-and-response format between the lead singer and the chorus, and its use of montuno sections, where the melody and harmony are repeated over a rhythmic pattern. Son cubano is also influenced by various regional styles, such as son oriental (from eastern Cuba), son montuno (from central Cuba), and son habanero (from Havana).
